Why send photographs?
There is one undeniable fact when it comes to incarceration: Every inmate enjoys receiving an envelope in the mail stuffed with photos. This simple gesture lifts the spirits, creates excitement, and reminds the inmate that someone out there is caring for them. Nobody in prison enjoys being left out during mail delivery. Checking the mail is an activity most of us take for granted. During periods of imprisonment this mundane chore takes on an oversized role in changing an inmate's entire day. After endless hours locked inside a cell the smallest change in routine is a welcomed distraction.
Photos also provide a wonderful opportunity for inmates to engage with one another over shared interests. Photographs are easily shared and speak a universal language that bring people together who would otherwise feel they have nothing in common.
